Burnout When You Love Your Work

Burnout hits differently when you love what you do.

Burnout is easy to talk about when you hate your job. It's harder when the work is your passion and stepping away feels impossible. George knows the second kind. A rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis pushed him to read what he calls his "burnout thermometer," the physical and mental signs that it's time to refuel before burnout sets in. Most of the time, he says, the feeling that you can't step away is "more perception than reality."

Who should be in the room

Founders, passionate professionals and high performers who love their work and are running too hot.

You'll walk away with

  • George's three moves: ask if stepping away is truly impossible, break it down, and set boundaries and communicate them
  • How to build your own burnout thermometer and read it early
  • Designing vacations and breaks into the calendar before you need them
  • Why George tells himself, "I'm going to play. I'm not going to work."
